Question 1

What is pelvic organ prolapse?

Accepted Answer

Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when the pelvic floor support structures weaken and one or more pelvic organs — the bladder, womb or bowel — descend into or through the vaginal canal. It's common, particularly after childbirth, though not all cases cause symptoms requiring treatment.

Question 2

What is complex or recurrent prolapse?

Accepted Answer

Complex or recurrent prolapse describes presentations where a previous repair hasn't held, more than one compartment is affected, or earlier surgery has changed the anatomy. These cases benefit from specific specialist assessment rather than being treated as routine repeat surgery.

Question 3

Can prolapse be treated without surgery?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many women improve with pelvic floor physiotherapy, vaginal pessary fitting and vaginal oestrogen. Surgery is considered only when symptoms are significant or when conservative treatment hasn't given adequate relief.

Question 4

Is mesh used in prolapse surgery?

Accepted Answer

Not in Professor Jha's private practice. Where apical (vault) support surgery is appropriate, she uses native-tissue techniques rather than synthetic mesh.

Question 5

Can menopause be assessed alongside a prolapse or urinary problem?

Accepted Answer

Yes — this is a particular focus of Professor Jha's practice. Menopause symptoms often overlap with prolapse, urinary symptoms, or the after-effects of previous gynaecological surgery, and these are assessed together rather than as separate problems.

Question 6

What is genitourinary syndrome of menopause?

Accepted Answer

Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) refers to changes in the vagina, vulva and bladder caused by reduced oestrogen after menopause, including dryness, discomfort during sex and urinary symptoms. It's a recognised and treatable condition.

Question 7

Is HRT right for me?

Accepted Answer

This depends on individual symptoms, medical history and risk factors. Professor Jha discusses the benefits and risks specific to each patient's circumstances at consultation rather than offering a general recommendation.

Question 8

Do I need a GP referral to see Professor Jha privately?

Accepted Answer

No. Patients can book a private consultation with Professor Swati Jha directly, without a GP referral.

Question 9

How much does a private consultation cost?

Accepted Answer

Question 10
